One Word, 3 Ways

Look how this dramatic kid uses the word of the issue, wings

Wings can mean:

  • parts of an animal’s body that are used for flying or gliding
  • the areas on the sides of a stage where performers wait before going onto the stage
  • does something without much practice or preparation

I just took over the role of Elfo the Flying Elf King in our school play. That’s why I’m wearing these wings.

Uh-oh, I think I’ve forgotten all my lines! I’ll have to wing it.

I’m waiting in the wings for my big entrance.

Root Power!

Meet Lexie! She time traveled from the ancient world and landed in Storyworks. Lexie loves words—especially ones with Greek and Latin roots. Today she’s using words with the Greek root mega. That means large. Can you figure out the meaning of the orange words below?

Lexie: I’m excited to see Penelope Escapade at her new movie opening. She’s a megastar!

Lexie: In the movie, Penelope plays a scientist who studies Ice Age megafauna, like saber-toothed cats and woolly mammoths.

Lexie: I’m a huge fan. I brought a megaphone so she can hear how much I love her.
