Storyworks Highlights of 2018-2019

For many of you, the school year has already ended and the summer fun has begun. (For those of you still winding down the final days of the year—hang in there!) Wildly enough, we here at Storyworks have just finished putting together our September 2019 issue. We’re so excited to share its powerful and engaging stories with you and your new classes in the fall!

But before we get too far ahead of ourselves (and who wants to start thinking about fall yet), we wanted to take a minute to look back on all the fabulous things that happened at Storyworks in the 2018-2019 school year. Because while the end of the school year is mostly about singing and dancing in the empty hallways and throwing old class papers in the air à la High School Musical, it’s also about looking back on the school year and doing some good old-fashioned reflecting.

Here are five highlights handpicked by the Storyworks team from this school year:

We introduced a new character, the Idiomizer. She’s fierce and fun, and the icing on the cake is that she’ll really help your students understand idioms. To make a long story short, I think we really hit the nail on the head with her! (Sorry!) If you haven’t met the Idiomizer yet, check out her debut in this year’s December/January issue, or read Lauren’s introduction here

We’re always looking for ways to connect with Storyworks teachers, so we started a Facebook group to share some behind-the-scenes glimpses into the magazine, talk ideas, get inspired, and connect you with other teachers. If you haven’t joined already—what are you waiting for? Click here to join!

Of course, there were so many winning articles in Storyworks this year, but teachers and students couldn’t stop raving about Lauren’s story about a fearless WWI hero: the pigeon Cher Ami. Read it here if you missed it—it’s a thrilling summer read!

Our new website launched earlier this school year and we think it’s pretty great. Plus, teachers are loving our premade Google quizzes and skill builders. There’s even more to come in the fall, so stay tuned!

We know poetry is a hard form to teach—all that figurative language, unconventional sentence structure, and not to mention all the inferencing that has to happen . . . But we also know that connecting with a poem can be incredibly inspirational for students. That’s why we created our new Poetry Kits, where you’ll find everything you and your students need to explore lovely poems like In Flanders Fields from our March/April issue or The Dandelion from May/June.

We’d love to hear how you used Storyworks this year . . . or just about your fun summer plans! As always, you can drop us a line at storyworks@scholastic.com, or even mail us a postcard at Storyworks Magazine P.O. Box 712, New York, NY 10013-0712.
